TUP Tournament Day 1

December 19th, 2009 · No Comments · Boys Basketball, totalUTAHpreps.com

HURRICANE - Day One of the inaugural totalUTAHpreps.com tournament turned in some very impressive preformances by all four teams. It also launched our video streaming efforts which turned out to be a big hit with many who took advantage of this new service.

HURRICANE  54, GUNNISON 37  The Tigers did not show any effects from a 14-hour trip the day before in Price, instead put on the throttle from the opening tap and squeezed out an impressive win 54-37 over Gunnison.

Hurricane held the Bulldogs to just six points in the first half and totally shut down Gunnison in the second quarter quarter, scoring 17 points to Gunnison’s 0 in the eight-minute stretch.  It was really a combination of a very quick Tiger defense and the lengthy arms 6′8 sophomore Boston Gubler, who had five blocks in the first half.

Gubler recorded the blocks, but also altered or even prevented many others from coming into the paint with his defensive presence. The Tigers had a very level scoring effort from a variety of players. Junior Robert Reeve led the team with eight points, with Anderson Rich and McCrae Vaifanua. It is a career high for the junior Vaifanua.

MAPLE MOUNTAIN 76, PAROWAN 70.  Ever been so far ahead in a race that you just put it on cruise control? That is what Maple Mountain did, pounding the ball inside and racking up a 30-point lead midway through the third quarter. But to the Rams credit, they chose to keep pressing and picking away at the Golden Eagles lead, scoring 36 points in the final period to turn a blow out into a competitive game.

Maple Moutain  enjoyed a great game from Jace Edmunds who scored a career high 18 points. MM also got double digit scoring from Cameron Starr and Kelby Crandall with 13 and 11 points respectively.

Parowan forced Maple Moutain into a bucket full of turnovers in the final 12 minutes of play and had they scored even a small percentage of inside shots in the first half, they could have possibly pulled off a major upset. Nonetheless, the Rams had a great game from Dylon Croall who scored a team high 17 points. Four other Parowan players scored in double figures, including 14 from both Josh Curtis and Zack Wood and a dime more from Ryan Robinson.

Parown will square off with Gunnison at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game and the Golden Eagles play at 3:00 against the Tigers. For more ont he game, click here
