SALT LAKE CITY - The greatest of Friday’s is upon us. Three games, three titles on the line. Next Friday, people will be shopping, eating, predicting the BYU-Utah winner (it will be the Utes) and relishing in a great day ‘on the turf’ .
The Guru has once again pondered, fasted and rubbed the belly of Kansas’ Mark Mangino and now know the winning teams that will raise the granite slab high above their head Friday. So in order of games, the Guru will accurately pick each game.
Timpview vs. Springville 4A Championship 11:00 a.m
Timpview has fought, scratched and struggled more this year than in other year in recent memory as they have cruised through three straight titles, won 34 straight. But in 2009 the T-Birds have lost games, lost key players and will appreciate this win over Springville even more than in recent memory. Springville has had a tremendous season and to think two years ago, were struggling in their Region and in the state and were not near the top of teams within their own county. So give many props to the Red Devils, but give the trophy to Timpview in a big way 35-10.
Davis vs. Bingham 5A State Championship 2:30 p.m.
Both teams are going for their second title of the decade. Both teams have been dominate on offense and even better on defense. It should be a classic battle, but the Guru is afraid it may not be. Davis has been the best team in the state on defense and that is what will keep them in the game, but the Miners have just enough to pull away early and then take Davis out of their game plan and squeeze out a win over the Darts 24-14.
Hurricane vs. Juan Diego 3A State Championship 6:30 p.m.
This will be the game of the day by far. Both teams have memories of 2008, some sweet, some bitter. Hurricane has carried a had a chip on their shoulder pads for a year now. Fans of the Tigers have talked about just a couple of plays for a year now. People are more than excited to bury that memory and create a new, positive thought. JD has other plans and would love, absolutely love to bury Hurricane in 2009. They feel like Hurricane shouldn’t have even been in the game with them and would also talk about a few more plays and walk away with a 20-point win. But that was in 2008 and both teams have earned the chance for the brass ring in 2009.
Juan Diego has dominated teams this year. They are solid in every aspect of the game. Offense, solid, Defense, even more dominant. Special teams, much improved from last year. How much will the loss of Keegan Andersen impact the Soaring Eagle? Enough to ground the Eagle. It is that big of a loss.
Hurricane has more weapons than they have ever had. They are difficult to prepare for and perhaps a few new wrinkles in Friday’s game will surpise JD. Look for a late touchdown by Jacob Pugh to make Washington County proud. Hurricane 28, Juan Diego 24
