Guru looks at odd week of games

September 30th, 2009 · No Comments · Football, The Guru, totalUTAHpreps.com

With the “fall recess” break (do people really need a recess after just a few weeks of school?) teams get used to playing on a different schedule throughout the state. Less preparation time, more possible upsets.

The guru accurately predicted the Cottonwood/Skyline game. After two decades of Eagle wins, the Colts came through for the “G”. Also pulled off the Maple Mountain/Payson game and the Ogden/Bonneville squeaker (RIP - TB). The well dried up at that point although could have snagged both the Hurricane/PV game (2 OT game) and Davis/Northridge affair, so overall, an acceptable week.

With little time to prepare, the snow coming down, and the leaves turning, the Guru has not done the usual mediation required for gridiron greatness. However, he will bring his “B+” game for those loyal readers of frivious information.

Game of the Week  Park City at Morgan Both teams 5-1, both teams on a roll, both teams needing this win to secure playoff pairings. PC will win their Region (with win over Wasatch), Morgan will take second (behind Juan Diego). The Guru saw both of these teams upclose last year and both are capable of going very deep in the playoffs. With both teams so evenly matched, it is difficult for the Guru to decide. Both teams have a great defense, well balanced offense. Nice coaches, solid mascots. What is not to like about either of these teams so oddly enough, the Guru is going with the rare tie. 14-14.

Viewmont at Davis One can begin to call the trophy engraver and put “2009 Region 1 Champions - Davis” on the trophy with a win tonight. 5-0 in Region play thus far. Viewmont will provide a scare to the Darts, but not enough as Davis handles the Vikings, the weather and wins 17-0

Weber at Bonneville Non-Region affair between these two long time rivals. Weber comes in with three-game winning streak. Make it four after tonight as Lakers just too inconsistent. Warriors 27-14

Dixie at Cedar Most intriguing Region 9 matchup. With a big win over SC last week, Cedar is getting the train rolling again. Almost eliminates SC’s chances for a playoff spot with two 3A losses unless the win out in 4A. Dixie solid against weak schools, decent against better schools. In a tight game that goes to the very end, Dixie 28, Cedar 27

Juan Diego at Highland (Idaho) The Guru has spent ample years in the Gem State to know that Highland always produces a tremendous program. Interesting scheduling on the Soaring Eagle. Highland is going to provide little hospitality and spank the undefeated JD 34-28

Virgin Valley at Hurricane Tigers finally get a needed respite from tough games with the Bulldogs coming to town. VV is always respectable and always competes for trophies in their conference in the Silver State, but this is just what the doctor ordered. Homecoming win for the Tigers 60-7
