LAYTON — Layoff? What layoff?
Behind James Cowser’s game-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and seven rebounds, Davis led wireto-wire Friday in a 58-43 Region 1 victory.
The Darts, on a threegame winning streak, dropped the Lancers — mired in a five-game skid — for the ninth consecutive time dating back to the 2003-04 season and are 10-1 versus Layton in the last 11 games.
“We were flowing offen
The Darts’ last game was Dec. 20, 2008, in Cedar City against Centennial (Nev.), but they shot 46.8 percent (22-of-47), including 37.5 percent (6-of-16) on 3-point attempts, while outrebounding the Lancers 32-28.
“We’re going to learn from last season’s (22-1) team, but establish our own identity,” said the 18-yearold Cowser. “Layton is a tough team, but it’s all about team for us. I hope to have more games like this. Rebounding is something I can do whether my shot is dropping or not.”
Trevor Daniels drilled two 3-pointers and had six assists and two steals for
“A region win, especially on the road, is always big,” Cowser said. “We’re working on becoming a better team and being solid. I have to play all three areas — scoring, rebounding and defense — while giving my best effort. If the shot is there, I’ll take it. But I need to go all out all the time.”
Layton’s top two scorers, Tanner Garner (14.7 points per game) and Taylor Butler (14.1 ppg), combined for only seven points, with Garner getting a season-low two points.
Camren Applegate had a season-high 14 points — hitting 5-of-8 shots — and grabbed a game-high 11 boards for the Lancers, who shot 37.8 percent (17-of-45),
“We were glad to finally get a game after such a long break. That was my big concern coming in,” Davis “Going into the (Christmas holiday) break we were playing pretty well. I feel like we maintained that tonight. I am pleased with that aspect of the game,” he said.
